Hello Peter!
What a nice capture of Bombylius species!
I tried to check in Fauna Europea web page data base how many species from this genus were noted from Italy - I expected that less than 30, but... I found exacly 30 species, so I could not emiminate even one... :(
But I will ask for help one of my friends working on flies (Syrphidae and Bombyliidae) so maybe any suggestion will be possible :)
Anyway, picture is really nice composed, has very good details and natural light.

Ps. Just comment from last moment - suggestion of my colleague. He thinks that it can be a Systoechus ctenopterus as only very few species from this family can be find so high. Anyway, he also noted that ID is not in 100% :)

Hi Peter , wonderful detail for this photo , with both the insect and flower. file depth is also good , and considering shutter speed and that you made the shot hand held the sharpness is great , nice job.

What a superb capture of this fluffy Bee-fly on a beautiful Nigritella orchid! Very fine sharp details and the colour of the fly goes so very nicely with that of the little Orchid.

You hace captured a unique species of flies here, Peter.
The POV from the rear shows all the characteristics of this specimen in vivid details.
The colours too are natural.
Hope the issue of the ID is soon cleared.

I have met this species in my region a lot and have few shot of it but your is more better and pictorial. I like whole scene so much and brilliant reproduction of every hair and other attractive features and details of the insect. Well done and kind regards.

Such a cute specimen in perfect focus and high definition my friend, I must admit I'm seeing this species for the first time. Double the number of wings, put a zebra design on the abdomen and presto! you have a bumble-bee!

Wowww... A wonderful shot of this fly resting on a flower, which I have not seen before Peter. Is it feeding on nectar? As I seen it has a very long proboscis (ıf I am not wrong). TFS and I wish you all the best in Easter time.
