[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is not the common Parnassius apollo but its close relative
- Parnassius phoebus
- family: Papilionidae

English: Alpine Apollo
German: Alpenapollo

Species information
One difference which discriminates phoebus from apollo are the clearly black and white ringed antennal shafts. Furthermore, phoebus shows a characteristic red spot at the forewing margin.

In the European Alps, the non-protected Parnassius phoebus is much rarer than its protected counterpart Parnassius apollo!

While P. apollo is found in several parts of Europe, P. phoebus is found in Europe exclusively in the Alps. It is furthermore found in Russia to Siberia and Kamtschatka as well as in North America.

Location
North Italian Alps, Peder-Valley, about 2200 m.
In the same place I found for example: Colias palaeno, Coenonympha gardetta, Erebia euryale, Erebia epiphron, Erebia tyndarus, Erebia gorge, Boloria napaea, Boloria pales, Melitaea varia and Agriades glandon.

Conditions
- bright natural light
- ISO 200
- handheld

Hi Peter

A beautiful butterfly with very interesting markings well captured in this lovely presentation.

I quite like the composition with the insect on the diagonal angle. The exposure levels were well managed and there are good contrasts visible in the whites and blacks. The f/9 aperture ensured sufficient DOF to capture all the detail of the subject with its opened wings lying on a nice flat plane. While we always try to get or wish for that idyllic BG the reality is such that we cannot manipulate or coax these insects to go and sit where we would like them to sit. If it was that simple we all would capture masterpieces and then nothing would have been exceptional anymore. However, it's a slight pity that the BG here is a little bit busy with the grass and the different coloured blades actually draws the eye to drift a little. But hey that's just me doing some nit picking and it's nothing really serious as it is a lovely photo as I already said.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Peter, Excellent wings open position and nice sharp image. Great composition and good frame. Ganesh

Classic name for this elegant butterfly, Peter.
I love the arrangement of red dots and black patches on its light blue wings.
The open-wing posture has been captured very adroitly.
Thanks for sharing it and regards.

Guten Tag Peter,
Anne

Hi Peter,
Outstanding shot of this beautiful Alpine Apollo butterfly with such lovely colours, markings and sharpness on its wings. Superb light and exposure control and you have captured a fine opne-winged pose among the grass. I like your top POV to portray it. Marvellous diagonal composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Bonjour Peter
J'aime beaucoup de papillon très rare, que je n'ai rencontré en France, que dans les alpes au nord de NICE.
Merci pour cette belle photo
