Series: ... Satyrinae of the North Italian Alps
Picture: .. no. 14

This is one of the numerous species of the genus Erebia, namely:
- Erebia gorge
- family: ........ Nymphalidae
- subfamily: ... Satyrinae
- tribe: .......... Satyrini
- subtribe: ..... Erebiina

English: Silky Ringlet
French: Le Moiré chamoisé

Please, look close to see the dark white centred eye-spots at the hindwing margin.

Species information
E. gorge is a high alpine species occuring between 1800 and 3000 m.
It is found in the European Alps, but also in the Pyrenees, in the Appenines, the Balkan and Dinarian Mountains.
Its habitats are rocky slopes and prefers to fly along rock faces.
When resting with closed winngs, the butterfly can be hardly distinguished from its environment.
The upperside wing pattern is more colourful and very variable. Unfortunately, I have no picture (perhaps this year). Several forms have been described which, however, do not arrive subspecies rank but are distributed among populations to a different degree. For me, the most beautifil form is f. triopes which shows 3 adjacent eye-spots within the brown marginal band of the forewing upperside.

Location
North Italian Alps, Val d'Ultimo, above Lake Quaira,
about 2200 m

Conditions
- cloudy and cold
- natural light
- ISO 400
- handheld, supporting the hands on the ground. The stalk in the foreground clearly disturbs the presentation. It was not possible to remove it without disturbing the butterfly. I did not apply post-processing but kept the natural situation.

Hello Peter. Congratulations on a first on TN. It would be great to get one with the wing open as you say maybe this year. You have captured this one with sharp focusing and fine detail which shows all thee hair on the head. very well done in bringing us this picture. Nick..

Hello Peter!

Great serie and excellent catch. Congratulations for capturing such rare butterfly. I like composition with perfectly detailed wings and hairy rest of body. Black and white looks better than lots of colours this time. Note is very interesting and helpfull. Great work!

Hi Peter,
This furry black butterfly is new to me. Very sharp and detailed. Composition is good. Thanks.

Congratulazioni per questa "prima" su TN, eccellente POV, straordinaria definizione dei dettagli, molto belli i colori, peccato per il piccolo disturbo dei fili d'erba. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Peter, congratulations for this first time at TN, elegant dark butterfly with splendid sharpness and wonderful details, very well done, have a good sunday, ciao Silvio

This indeed looks like the first ever picture of this butterfly on TN, Peter.
It is a marvellous capture, no doubt. I guess it is a small butterfly and I would be curious about its upper side of wings.
Thanks and regards.

Excellent composition, Peter.
You explored TN a lot, so you knew exactly which creature that hasn't been upload yet. Congratulation, Peter!

Best regards,
Bima

Not very colourful, but very elegant species Peter. I like profile POV and sharpness. DOF is also very nice but on the other hand it is a pitty that some grass leaf (?) is seen in the front of butterfly. Anyway, this is another very interesting presentation and great part of your Satyrinae theme :)
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Hello Peter,

Excellent capture of this beautiful butterfly. Excellent sharpness. Great light and colours.
Cheers,

Hallo Peter,
Peter
