[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The picture shows a resting specimen of
- Colias palaeno
- family: Pieridae

English: Moorland Clouded Yellow
German: Hochmoorgelbling
French: Le Solitaire

Not far from the place where I found Colias palaeno, I could take pictures also of Colias phicomone (see: here!).

Colias palaeno - a fast flier and an expert to hide quickly
When the sun is shining, C. palaeno flies with high speed over the alpine meadows. Resting for taking up some nutrients takes only a short time ... then continuing their flight. When the sun hides behind clouds they hide quickly in the vegetation, i.e. the Juniperus plants which cover the habitat and which make moving not so easy for the photographer. But sometimes, you can discover a specimen within the low bushes as is the case shown by this picture.

Species information
The species is distributed in middle, east and northeast Europe as well as in Asia eastwards to Japan and in North America.
The type locality, the place from where it was described first, is Uppsala in Sweden.
In the Alps it likes open places with Juniperus communis. In the lowlands, C. palaeno inhabites more humid places.
Wing span: 40 - 48 mm
Larval foodplant: Vaccinium uliginosum and V. myrtillus.

Location
North Italian Alps, Peder-Valley (a tributary of the Martell-Valley), 2300 m

Conditions
- natural light, sun shortly hidden behind cloud
- no wind
- ISO 400
- handheld

Hello Batu!
You were so lucky to see this species! In Poland it is extremely rare and very difficult to see it in the wild. Picture is very good, sharp and clear with good DOF and colours.
I didn't know that it has two Vaccinium species as foodplant, I knew only about V. uliginosum.
TFS and have a nice Sunday!
Greetings,
Radomir

Hallo Peter,

Anne

This is a very good shot. The yellows and greens work together exceptionally well. Detail is really nice. I never realized there were so many alpine butterflies. Gary
