The Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Found across most of Europe (not Scandinavia), north Africa, and as far east as Iran, the late twentieth century has seen an expansion of its range in the UK. Despite its common name, this butterfly is one of the "browns", of the subfamily Satyrinae. They are a common sight in unimproved grasslands across southern Britain, particularly on the South Downs.
Like other members of its subfamily, the larvae feed on various grasses. The full range is unknown, but it is thought that Red Fescue Festuca rubra is essential in their diet. Eggs are laid on the wing, or from brief perches on grass stems, and are just sprinkled among the grass stems. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately enter hibernation, and only feed the following spring when the fresh growth occurs. They are a lime green colour, with a dark green line running down the middle of their back. Pupation takes place at ground level in a loose cocoon. Adults emerge in July, and, on a good site, in warm, sunny weather, thousands can be seen gently fluttering amongst the grass heads. Another nickname for the Marbled White butterfly is the "Marmoress”


La Melanargia Galathea pur appartenendo alla fam. Satyridea i cui rappresentanti sono farfalle di colore marrone con macchie il cui centro è bianco (simili ad occhi di rapaci), esse sono di colore bianco con segni scuri.
Il maschio si differenzia dalla femmina per l'intensità delle macchie nere sulle ali e per la presenza di un margine a mo' di cornice su entrambi le ali, come si può notare dalla foto.
Una caratteristica peculiare di questa famiglia di farfalle è quella di avere un ingrossamento alla base di alcune venuzze site sulle ali anteriori, molto evidente nell'esemplare vivo.
Diverse ipotesi sono state formulate sull'utilizzo da parte dell'animale di questi ingrossamenti, che sembrano essere cavi. Una tra le più accreditate ipotesi ritiene che tali ingrossamenti servano all'animale per la percezione dei suoni.
Un'altra caratteristica che le differenzia dalle altre farfalle bianche sta nela forma delle quattro zampe che sono ambulacrali, cioè atte al movimento. Le zampe che hanno di solito le farfalle di questa famiglia sono a forma di spazzola e non sono idonee al movimento.
Presentano un paio di antenne non molto clavate e sono farfalle che amano vivere nelle praterie e si nutrono di nettare.
Le larve presentano un corpo assottigliato alle due estremità e posteriormente possiedono una corta "coda" forcuta. Il loro colore va dal verde al marrone e si nutrono di erba. E’ conosciuta anche con il nome “Marmoress”

Lovely macro capture of the Marbled White butterfly with wonderful details!
The colors are perfectly natural. The sharpness and POV are well chosen along with nice use of the shallow DOF. The bright purple colored flower enhances beauty to the picture and the blurry BG is just oof. Well done!

Hello Roberto,

This is a fine capture of the Marbled White but what struck me first was your superb composition. The thistle head is nicely placed in the b/r/h corner which places the butterfly in the 'strong' area for composition. A nice dof makes this a very pleasing photograph.

superbs angle of depiction.
The corner positioning is lovely in style. the bright glowing colour of the flower really put this shot into an exciting one. The patterns of the buttefly wing is soft and pretty.
