Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Superfamily: Papilionoidea

Family: Nymphalidae

Subfamily: Nymphalinae

Tribe: Nymphalini

Genus: Vanessa

Species: V. atalanta

The Red Admiral or Vanessa atalanta (previously also known as Pyrameis atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.
This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.
In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the pale fire of ivy flowers on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies on sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe.
In North America, the Red Admiral generally has two broods from March through October. Most of North America must be recolonized each spring by southern migrants, but this species over-winters in South Texas.

Hi Silvio,
A little bit damaged Red Admiral - seems like (s)he just came from the war, I mean from a bird's bill. Excellent playing with lights and shadows, beautiful colors - as a photography, this is absolutely perfect. Bravo amico.
Best wishes, Ladislao

Hello Silvio, excellent close up shot of this old admiral with great details and POV.
TFS and G's,
Mehmet

Hola Silvio,

Saludos,

Jesús

Hi Silvio,
beautiful colours and a good picture even if the butterfly has some damages!
regards
Pierre

Ciao Silvio! Excellent capture, perfect contrast and sharp, ideal colours. Good exposure. Great effect. Well done!

Ciao Silvio,
Grazie e complimenti
Ciao Maurizio

Captured in November ... that's amazing.
Hi Silvio, your last admiral for 2009 is wonderful. Warming in the last sunshine, damaged but jet pretty. This shot is our hope that we will meet them again next summer. Thanks and greetings

Hello Silvio,
Excellent capture on this Red Admiral. Beautiful colors and sharp detail. I agree that this one is probably near the end of his life cycle, and that is why he is looking ragged. Nice shot!Best regards Siggi

Ciao Silvio. Dettalio luce e colori ottimi!

Hi Silvio. This butterfly has seen better days with its torn wings. But its still makes for a great colourful picture. You top POV shows it with such fine detail with rich colours in the warm sun light. Well taken TFs.
Nick..
