La famiglia dei Ninfalidi è composta da un elevato numero di specie, sono circa una settantina in Europa. Tutte queste farfalle hanno la medesima caratteristica di essere molto vistose. Le zampe anteriori sono ridotte e solo negli esemplari maschi somigliano a spazzole. In alcune di queste specie è possibile capire il sesso della farfalla solo grazie alla struttura delle zampe anteriori.
Un'altra caratteristica che le accomuna è che sono delle farfalle migratorie. Il più famoso lepidottero migratore dei ninfalidi è la farfalla Monarca.

Argynnidae

Le arginnidi sono farfalle iperattive: esse si muovono con un frullio d'ali come fanno i dadi in un fritillus. Nell'antica Roma, dove il gioco dei dadi (tesserae) era diffusissimo, questi strumenti erano chiamati Pyrgus o Fritillus, e ne sono stati ritrovati parecchi in ferro battuto, riccamente decorati. Probabilmente il termine più corretto da usare è proprio quest'ultimo Fritillus e non quello inglese. In francese, muoversi con un frullio d'ali si dice frétiller. Entrambe queste etimologie non sono certe e secondo altre fonti la parola sarebbe dovuta alle loro macchie.

Argynnis niobe

E' una farfalla di medie dimensioni, con apertura alare 50-55 mm, appartenente alla famiglia dei Ninfalidi. Argynnis niobe ha ampie ali, il cui dorso è arancione smagliante, variato da macchie e linee nere, molto simile a quello delle specie congeneri, soprattutto adippe e aglaja. Il rovescio dell’ala anteriore presenta nervature di color nero intenso che la distinguono da Argynnis adippe, che ha nervature più chiare. Di questa specie ci sono due forme distinte: la forma tipica caratterizzata da macchie bianche leggermente argentate sul rovescio delle ali posteriori, comune solo in Francia, e la forma “eris” più ampiamente diffusa con macchie giallognole.
E' presente in Europa centrale e meridionale, in Nord d'Europa il suo areale lambisce la penisola Scandinava, ma non è presente in Gran Bretagna. E' ampiamente diffusa e localmente comune, ma sulla sua diffusione e sulla sua consistenza è da tenere presente che le valutazioni sono influenzate dalla presenza nello stesso areale di due specie congeneri (adippe e aglaja) e quindi i numeri parziali potrebbero essere valutati per differenza e/o per stima, soprattutto se i conteggi sono fatti solo sulla base degli spostamenti in volo, che rende difficile una sicura identificazione. E' presente in tutta Italia con esclusione della Sardegna.
Il periodo di volo va da giugno-luglio, prediligendo i luoghi aperti fioriti, di solito con boschi nelle vicinanze, in habitat in cui sono presenti le piante ospiti del genere Viola, dalla pianura fino a oltre 2000 metri di quota.

La fotografia

E’ stata scattata in montagna a circa 1500 metri sul livello del mare e si tratta della stessa farfalla che ho già presentato ad ali aperte. In occasione di quella presentazione affermavo di essere sicuro dell'identificazione poiché avevo potuto osservare bene anche il lato inferiore delle ali. La sola visione del dorso, considerate anche le dimensioni abbastanza simili, renderebbe ardua una sicura distinzione fra Argynnis adippe, aglaja e niobe. Osservando il lato inferiore delle ali la distinzione di Argynnis niobe e di Argynnis adippe da Argynnis aglaja diventa piuttosto facile, ma è invece complicato distinguere fra loro Argynnis adippe e Argynnis niobe. Dal confronto delle immagini che riporto anche in WORKSHOP per la visione comparata, si possono evidenziare due sicuri caratteri distintivi:
1) in Argynnis niobe è presente una piccola macchia sotto la nervatura mediana vicino la base della cellula, che è assente in Argynnis adippe (talvolta questa piccola macchia racchiude un puntino nero);
2) in Argynnis niobe le nervature presenti sulle ali sono decisamente più marcate in nero che non in Argynnis adippe.
Non è la prima volta che su TN vengono evidenziate tali distinzioni, ma le ho riportate per esteso perchè possono essere utili a coloro che non hanno ancora avuto modo di fare questi confronti. Rinvio eventualmente per ulteriori dettagli a quanto già presentato da marcellr in un suo workshop

Ciao Maurizio,senza dubbio la miglior combinazione di colori della stagioni.Il fiore del trifoglio rosa fa' pendant alla perfezione coi colori della Argynnis e col verde "caldo" dello sfondo...uno scatto strabiliante,oggi sei ancora riuscito ad entusiasmarmi,e visto il livello di qualita' raggiunto da molti non e' cosa facile,mi sono abituato troppo bene.Complimenti e buona giornata,Luciano

This is one of the best capture of A. niobe that I have seen. The lighting was well used to achieve a sharp and attractive image to show the wings with superb details. Nicely composed on the leguminous flower against a neutral BG too.

Brilliantly composed picture of an amazing subject. I do not know what is more beautiful: butterfly or flower. Did you know that red clover has some of the greatest cancer preventing properties of all musicianship. I have only seen a very few patches and that was in my wilderness property where we made tea with it...A grand shot of the clover alone more or less the focal!
