Gli Apoidea (Latreille, 1802) sono una superfamiglia di imenotteri che raggruppa circa 20.000 specie.


Comprende 9 famiglie, di cui 7 sono rappresentate nell'areale paleartico europeo: Collectidae, Adrenidae, Halictidae, Melittidae, Megachilidae, Anthophoridae e Apidae; di queste solo alcune hanno vita sociale, mentre le altre famiglie non ne hanno alcuna, e perciò sono dette 'api solitarie'.
Agli Apoidea appartengono anche le specie della famiglia Apidae, nella cui sottofamiglia Apinae si ritrova il genere Apis cui appartiene l'ape domestica da miele (Apis mellifera).

L'ape europea (Apis mellifera Linnaeus 1758) è la specie del genere Apis maggiormente diffusa nel mondo.
Originaria del vecchio mondo, Europa, Africa e parte dell Asia, fu introdotta nei continenti americano e australiano. Fu classificata da Carolus Linnaeus nel 1758 con il nome Apis mellifica, per tale motivo, nonostante sia oramai utilizzata la nuova nomenclatura, alcuni autori utilizzano la denominazione originaria.

I like this composition;one can see how intensely is the bee at its work.

A wonderful composition featuring a bee finding good pickings on a white flower, Silvio.
One of its legs is heavily laden with pollen.
