A detail of some "calanchi", a particular hills erosion effect

I calanchi sono tipiche morfologie del terreno, presenti su versanti collinari, causate dall'erosione delle acque di dilavamento in terreni pelitici o marnosi.

Normalmente sono il prodotto dell'evoluzione geomorfologica di paesaggi dove l'assenza di una copertura vegetale protettiva e stabilizzante (talvolta asportata per motivi naturali o antropici) mette a nudo i terreni erodibili sottostanti che vengono quindi incisi profondamente dalle acque di ruscellamento superficiale, producendo incisioni separate da costoni a forma di lama di coltello, facilmente disgregabili.

Il paesaggio a calanchi è caratteristico di ambienti climatici aridi e semiaridi con precipitazioni intense e concentrate, fortemente “aggressive”, su suoli e substrati facilmente erodibili. In Italia i calanchi sono diffusi lungo i versanti appenninici.

A volte, sono frutto di disboscamenti avvenuti nell'antichità. Un corretto rimboschimento con specie vegetali idonee può frenare o addirittura fermare del tutto questo processo di erosione del suolo.

Nella letturatura anglofona le aree con calanchi sono incluse nelle regioni denominate badlands.

Hello Giorgio,
This is an interesting image showing what will happen if there is nothing to bind in the form of vegetation of any kind!
The colour is beautiful but as it is the colour of death...
Good details in this well framed subject!

very interestig picture. sharp, full of details and textures. I know the "badlands" as a natural erosion phoenomenon from Arizona USA. they have plenty of it. Now, the man provoqued erosions are a totally different story...
