[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I tried to take a picture of a dregonfly, but this is the best I obtained with my camera.
Unfortunately it's slow to focus and its macro is not so great, at the end I have to accept this until I'll buy a reflex camera :)

Hi Giorgio

Very nice first try for a dragonfly photo. I really like the colors of this speciemen and the way they make it stand out so nicely from all the stones an twigs on the ground.
The DOF is also good - keeping the entire body and wings in full focus, but i'm affraid the sharpness is not at it's highest level.
Permit me to say that your camera is actually a very good camera and you can shoot dragonflies very niely with it. Here are some pointers:

1. stay at a reasonable distance and use your zoom with courage. The 300mm zoom you have is more that enough to shoot them from anywhere between 1 and 2 meters, depending on the size of the species. To get close to one, just be very very patient and try not to make sudden moves. You'll get it :)

2. In such cases as this one, try laying all the way down in order to put some distance between the subject and the immediate BG. This will give you a better isoaltion for the dragonfly.

3. Don't be affraid to use the entire range of the f-stop. Try every shot with the minimum. maximum and also somewhere in the middle...you'll have more results to choose from at the end of the day.

I know all these might come a little late in the year, but at least you'll have something to look forward for the next spring :)

Cheers and TFS
Horia

Hello Giorgio,
The composition is fine, and the point of view shows the insect quite well!
Sharpness may be a tiny problem, and I guess you used the macro mode... I also used a Fuji FinePix before and in my experience it worked better in manual mode for close-up!
Greetings,
Pablo -
