Series: ... Satyrinae of the North Italian Alps
Picture: .. no. 9

The species shown is a male of
- Erebia montana (de Prunner, 1798)
- Nymphalidae, Satyrinae,
- tribe: Satyrini
- subtribe: Erebiina
Common names:
English: Marbled Ringlet
German: ----
French: Le Moiré striolé

The genus Erebia comprises more than 90 different and sometimes very similar species worldwide. Erebia species occur in Europe, palaeaerctic Asia and in North America.

Erebia montana is found in the French Alps, Switzerland, western Austria, the north Italian Alps (Ortler Alps) and also in the Abruzzi. In the Alps, it occurs from 500 m upwards to 2800 m but is rarely encountered at the extreme limits of the range. Usually, it occurs at bout 1800 and 2000 m. Here, it likes to fly along or up and down rocky outcrops and likes to rest at steep rocks.

Wing span of E. montana: about 40 mm.

Close relatives of E. montana are:
E. stirius, E. styx, E. pronoe, E. melas, E. lefebvrei and E. scipio.
In this series, I have shown pictures of E. styx and E. pronoe, also (# 03 and # 07). Serveral subspecies of the latter show wing colour patterns which are very similar to montana, in particular paterns of the wing underside. Perhaps, I will show these similar but different patterns of some Erebia species in a collage, later.

The picture was taken in the upper Martell-Valley. Altitude: about 2100 m.

Ciao Peter,

Hello Peter,
Another fine Erebia contribution, this time montana. The uppersurface of the two wings are shown in good focus against a neutral BG and the composition on the knapweed flower is pleasing, as are the colours and exposure.
Well done, thanks and have a nice weekend,
Ivan

Hello Peter,
Very good natural light.
Excellent composition.
Well done

Hi Peter,
Very sharp, clear focus giving excellent detail, although I find the brightness of the BG a little distracting. Interesting genus this, that always gives lots of cause for doubt. So it remains fascinating and frustrating at the same time. I think I'll stick to Lycaenids as a main interest group. However, seeing this reminded me I took a couple of snaps of an Erebia in Switzerland a couple of years back, before I joined TN. I'll dig these out and post tomorrow. Then you can tell me which species it is for certain; hopefully, confirm my suspicions. Thanks
Alan

Hallo Peter.
Peter

Hi Peter,
Wonderful shot and you have portrayed a beautiful satyrinae species. Lovely colours and markings on its wings and I like your POV to capture it. The pink flowers add nice colours and makes the frame look majestic. Great lighting and DOF. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

This is a powerful image of a unique species of butterflies from North Italy, Peter. In fact, the entire set of them as listed in your note is an impressive collection of remarkable images.
I have enjoyed looking at them and have benefited a lot form your very informative note.
TFS and regards,
Ram
