The picture shows the burnet
- Zygaena exulans
- family: Zygaenidae

against bright sunlight so that the wings appear transparent. When resting the red coloured spots appear more distinct (see here).

In the Alps, the species occurs between altitudes of 1900m and 3000m. In other regions, such as Scotland and Scandinavia, suitable habitats have lower elevations (150 - 1000m).

Forewing length: about 15 mm

Larval foodplant: preferentially Fabaceae, but also Caryophyllaceae, Scophulariaceae, Betulaceae and Saxifragaceae, for example.

Locality: Butzen-Valley deviating from the upper Martell-Valley, about 2600 m. Here, and also in other valleys nearby (Peder-V., Lyfi-V, Rosim-V.) the species was rather abundant.

Other Zygaenidae which I found in the north Italian Alps:

Zygaena filipendulae
Zygaena purpuralis or Z. minos
Zygaena transalpina
Procris geryon

- natural bright light
- ISO 200
- hand-held

Hi Peter.
Wonderful upper POV and amazing picture of this fluffy creature. Details and colour reproduction (despite the black dominant tone) are simply great. Diagonal composition and light BG create a very nice esthetic impression. My compliments and best wishes in started 2008 year.
Alexei.

Hi Peter,

Sabine - wishnugaruda

Hi Peter,
You've caught the burnet in a perfect pose, its plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the camera, so every point of it is sharply in focus. Strong backlighting hides some of the natural colors but still, it is a magnificent shot. TFS.
Mehmet

Ciao Peter,

Hi Peter,
It's a fantastic, a sort of butterfly and moth. It has nice wins, sweetness and silky ycolours but it has given the creeps itself !!

Hi Peter,
A magnificent capture of this Alpine Burnet showing incredible detail all over.
It certainly does look different with the light coming through the wings.
Incidentally, did you know that the Six Spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae) was the very first posting ever on TN ?
You can see Robb Browns post Here
Great image.
Cheers
Steve

Hallo Peter,
Peter
