WORKSHOP: The male.

HETEROPTERA, LYGAEIDAE

The Lygaeidae are a family in the Hemiptera (true bugs) comprising twenty-one genera. The family includes insects commonly known as Seed Bugs, Milkweed Bugs and Chinch Bugs. Many of the species feed on seeds, although some are predators of other insects, some feed on sap and others feed on blood.
Some of them are a serious pests of agricultural crops and other vegetation.
The Large Milkweed Bugs (Spilostethus spp.) are red in colour, with black pattern. Sure this is the warning colour pattern to their predators. Their antennae and legs are black in colour.
The bugs is feeding on the Milkweed seed. Notice its sucking mouths (stylets) is inserted into the seed and sucking the juice.
The red and black patterns on their back is a warning to the would-be predators that they are toxic. All insects we found feeding on Milkweed plants have some sort of warning patterns

Ma dai !!! Ma in Sicilia ci sono in circolazione queste meraviglie a meta' gennaio??? Sei proprio fortunato,io ho iniziato a pubblicare foto di fiori selvatici perche' ho finito gli insetti...proponibili...per evitare inutili repliche ho optato per questa scelta,ma come vedi su TN in questo periodo ci sono solo un sacco di fiori e uccelli,c'e' poco da fotografare,meno male che ci sei tu che inizi l'anno con quest'altra fantastica macro..grazie della tua presenza (non buttare voti per me,lo so che le mie foto non sono del tuo genere prferito,tanto io ti voto lo stesso perche' sei il piu' grande.eheheh) ciao,Luciano

My congratulations. Excellent both macro shots. Perfect scenes, great exposure despite the difficult light and colour conditions. Sharpness and details are spot on as well as the framing and composition of both shots. Bravo.

Hi Marcello!
It is really nice to hear that there are some places in Europe where it is possible to photograph insects at the beginning of January. In Lodz we have still some 0C and no insects (except these which are winter active :>)
Fantastic photo with great, optymistic colours, beautiful sharpness and POV.
And I believe that I have not seen this species before.
