The picture shows the hoverfly
- Volucella pellucens
- family: Syrphidae

This comparatively large and robust hoverfly does not remind of other delicate species of the family -
like many of the yellow and black wasp-mimicking species which are often seen on flowers and also at TN.

Locality: North Italian Alps, lower parts of Val Martello at about 1100 m in the vicinity of Burgaun.

General information on Volucella pellucens:
Distribution: Europe, Asia to Siberia and Japan.
Habitat: Forest trails and clearings
Body length: 12 - 16 mm
Development: Larva live in nests of wasps and bumble bees

Hallo Peter,

sie ist Dir ganz wunderbar gelungen, die Fliege. Die Arista ist haarscharf, das Auge zeigt noch die Ommatidienunterteilung, was auch den Sonnenreflex abmildert. Diese Art hat mich schon lange zum photographieren gereizt, aber sie kommt selten und ist schwierig abzulichten (schwarz und weiss), ich habe nur ein einziges braucbares Bild in Konserve, mal nachsehen. Danke für die schöne Präsentation.

A super macro Peter, your POV even shows a haltere beneath the left wing, the detail of the compound eye is amazing, so is that of the small antenna. Excellent composition my friend.
