He's back from the second world-wide war!

Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Suborder: Ditrysia
Family: Papilionidae
Subfamily: Papilioninae
Genus: Iphiclides
Species: I. podalirius

The Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a butterfly found in gardens, fields and open woodlands. It is found in places with sloe thickets and particularly orchards. It is also called Sail Swallowtail or Pear-tree Swallowtail. is widespread throughout Europe with the exception of the northern parts. Its range extends northwards to Saxony and central Poland and eastwards across Asia Minor and Transcaucasia as far as the Arabian peninsula, India, and western China. A few specimens of the Scarce Swallowtail have been reported from central Sweden and the UK but they were probably only strays and not migrants. The scarcity of UK migrants is responsible for the English common name. In the Alps it can be found up to altitudes of 1600 m.In some years the Scarce Swallowtail is quite abundant. The Scarce Swallowtail is getting rarer as the blackthorn bushes are being cleared; and it is now protected in some central European countries. It is protected by law in Czech republic, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg and Poland. It is considered Rare-Endangered and protected in some provinces of Austria and of status Indeterminate throughout Europe.

Hello Luciano, my neighbour
this great documentary macro with great sharp details, POV and composition. It is old specimens and its antenna and wings damaged. In last year, I posted similar shot from Lycaenid butterfly. Yesterday was my happy day that I also saw your species, but I have met it rarely.
TFS, well done
Ahmet

I love the notes...I was thinking the same thing even before I read your notations...Very good capture and super super notes!

Oh dear! Poor butterfly - his time is short. He has aged and his wings are in tatters
Well shown Luciano - and thank you for the notes - we don't have them here in New Zealand.

Hi My dear friend Luciano, perfectly focused and detailed close-up capture of a this poor butterfly. It is really seems to be damaged after a war.
TFS and Cheers,
Bayram

Hello Luciano,

You are right!
This poor specimen has been in the wars!
Would this damage have been done by a preditor or is it just wear and tear from age?

Wonderfully detailed shot showing all the ragged edges to the wings as well as the pattern and colours.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Luciano,
What a poor looking fella. It seems to have struggled very much in its life. And the reward is it is alive. Very well captured with sharp details and a very good composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Bonjour Luciano!

Roberto

Hi Luciano,
Very interesting capture. I've never seen such damaged wings on living butterfly. Is it a living or a dead one repositioned by You?
Living or not, a very good shot. Great exposure, compo, DOF and colors. Bravo.
Thank You very much for handling my critique on Your Inachis io photo as it is - a CRITIQUE, and not as a personal insult someone else thought, quite wrongly.
Ciao e grazie, László
