[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Crete Senesi (Siena's Clays) are a very particular hilly zone to east south in Siena, whose clayey composition is due to their ancient nature of sea basin, with sand and mud.The area has been submerged by the sea up to around 1 million years ago... After the waters' withdrawal, the irregular deposits of clay layers and sand came to the light with their numerous fossils of molluscs of various kind.

The process of erosion of these grounds has done that they were formed numerous inlets, said "calanchi", and the "biancane", small hills with the shape of " dome", on which the sulfate of sodium has appeared on the surface, following the exposure to the sun, and it confers them a characteristic clear color. These long natural upsettings have made some landscape of the Clays one of the most unique and interesting sceneries of the whole Tuscany!

The principal characteristic of the Crete (Clays) is still therefore a prominent nature, made of a great deal of unusual colors, as the grey one of the clay and the yellow one of the sulfate.
