Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Family: Hesperiidae

Subfamily: Hesperiinae

Genus: Pyrgus

Pyrgus is a genus in the Skippers butterfly family, Hesperiidae, known as the Grizzled Skippers. The name 'Grizzled Skipper' best describes this genus, but in some countries the name 'Checkered Skipper' or 'Chequered Skipper' is applied to some species. Strictly speaking, 'Chequered Skippers' applies to butterflies of the genus Carterocephalus.
Amongst the Pyrgus this is a large butterfly. It is also one of the easiest to identify. It is the only Pyrgus in which the underside margins are white throughout. In other species this is incomplete as the black ground colour always extends to the wing edge in two or more places. The rest of the underside is also has characteristically marbled appearance.
It is found throughout southern and central Europe in open grassy places from low and high places. It isn't ever common in my experience but isn't hard to come across in likely looking places.

Ciao Roberto,
Grazie e complimenti
Buona domenica
Ciao Maurizio

Hi Roberto. I have seen so many first class pictures of butterflies this wekk and this one is up there with them. You have taken a sharp close up of this pyrgus carthami with fine detail. The use of the light has given bright natural colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

Ciao Roberto,
A very fine macro of a skipper, showing the colsed wings from a good POV with excellent sharpness.
This looks more like Pyrgus andromedae than P. carthami, but I am only 90% sure! :)
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Hi Roberto,
wow...what a lovely shot in great light and sharpness. The purple coloured flowers indeed add beauty to your exciting posed skipper. The blurry green is very enhancing.
Well presented in a great syle.

regards,
Foozi
