La rana comune o rana verde (Rana esculenta Linnaeus, 1758) è un anfibio della famiglia dei Ranidae.
La sua tassonomia è alquanto complessa e discussa essendo presenti in Italia diversi Klepton, unità sistematiche formate cioè da un complesso costituito da una specie e dal suo ibrido ibridogenetico. In Europa sono presenti tre tipi diversi di Rane Verdi: Rana verde maggiore Rana ridibunda, Rana dei fossi Rana lessonae, Rana verde minore Rana esculenta le loro interrelazioni sono tuttora oggetto di discussione. La Rana lessonae fu descritta per la priva volta da Lorenzo Camerano nel 1882 fu chiamata cosi in onore del suo maestro l'erpetologo Michele Lessona. Rana esculenta sarebbe un ibrido tra R. lessonae e R. ridibunda, il processo è detto ibridogenesi e gli ibridi non si accoppiano mai tra loro ma sempre con una delle due specie parentali, vengono cosi generate delle popolazioni miste. Uzzel e Holtz nel 1979 studiarono le popolazioni italiane di rane verdi e conclusero che a sud del Po vi sarebbero due diverse specie una non ancora classificata per cui è stato proposto il nome di Rana kl esculenta e Rana lessonae. La specie è comune in Europa, ad eccezione della penisola iberica e della Norvegia. In Gran Bretagna si è acclimatata con successo. In Italia è ampiamente diffusa ovunque, sino a 1200 m d'altitudine come la Rana italica. La Rana esculenta è una rana acquatica di 12 cm di lunghezza, dal muso appuntito e dalle dita ampiamente palmate. Il dorso, è di colore verde smagliante o bruno oliva, talvolta cosparso di macchie nere, è ornato, ad ogni lato. L'ibernazione ha luogo nella melma dello stagno in cui vive. Come detto la situazione è molto complessa, in effetti R. ridibunda ha i sacchi vocali di colore nero ed è la più grande delle tre, in R. lessonae invece sono bianchi e inoltre ha colorazione più vivace tendente al giallo, in particolare nei maschi, R. esculenta infine avrebbe caratteristiche intermedie: è più piccola di R. ridibunda e più grande di R. lessonae e i sacchi vocali hanno colore grigio.

The Edible Frog (Pelophylax kl. esculentus) is a name for a common European frog, also known as the common water frog or green frog (however, this latter term is also used for the North American species Lithobates clamitans). It is used for food, particularly in France for the delicacy frogs' legs. Females are between 5 to 9 cm long, males between 6 to 11 cm.Pelophylax esculentus is the fertile hybrid of the Pool Frog (Pelophylax lessonae) and the Marsh Frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), hence the addition of the "kl." (for klepton or synklepton) in the species name. During the ice ages[clarification needed] the population of the common ancestor of both species was split into two. These populations diverged, but remained genetically close enough to be able to create fertile hybrids. However, when edible frogs mate with each other, their offspring are often misformed, so there are no pure populations of edible frogs. The hybrid populations are propagated by female edible frogs mating with males of one of the parental species.
