Argynnis aglaja

Il nome di questa farfalla Aglaia appartiene ad una figura della mitologia greca e deriva da Aglaos che significa splendente, bellissimo. In sanscrito Agla-y significa colui che porta il fuoco.
In entrambi i significati il nome è azzeccatissimo per questa farfalla splendente e bellissima dal colore arancio molto caldo. A dire il vero le farfalle con le caratteristiche di colori, disegni (soprattutto della parte superiore) e dimensioni molto simili sono tre: A. adippe, A. aglaja e A. niobe, che sono praticamente indistinguibili senza un'attenta osservazione e la verifica della parte inferiore delle ali posteriori.

La Argynnis aglaja è complessivamente la farfalla più comune delle tre, diffusa in tutta Europa in piccole colonie anche a basse altitudini, anche se in Italia è più comune sopra i 1000 metri. La parte superiore delle ali, come detto, è di un bellissimo arancione con disegni neri, mentre la pagina inferiore delle ali posteriori presenta, come quasi tutte le farfalle del suo genere, delle brillanti macchie bianche con uno sfondo verdognolo accentuato, che la rende facilmente distinguibile.

E' una buona volatrice che ama gli spazi aperti ed è dotata di un volo rapido. Fortunatamente sosta frequentemente a suggere il nettare dai capolini di cardi e centauree, il che consente di osservarla e di fotografarla con una certa facilità.

Il periodo di volo va da Giugno ad Agosto e la larva si nutre di specie del genere Viola.

La fotografia

La fotografia è stata scattata con il teleobiettivo 300 mm., con misurazione della luce spot, regolazione manuale del tempo e del diaframma, ISO200, in una zona montana delle Prealpi ad una quota di circa 1550 m. slm, dove questa specie s'incontra con una certa frequenza ed è facilmente visibile per il suo vistoso colore arancione e per la discreta dimensione.
In realtà quando si osserva il volo di questa farfalla è difficile dire se si tratti proprio di Aglaja o se invece si stia osservando una Adippe, o ancora, ma forse più raramente, se si tratti di una Niobe. In questa immagine che si tratti di Argynnis aglaja appare evidente in quanto il lato inferiore delle ali la rende inconfondibile rispetto alle congeneri come ad esempio Adippe, quest'ultima confondibile eventualmente con Niobe.

A superb almost full frame macro of a female A. aglaja taken from a great POV while resting with the wings closed on an ox-eye daisy with superb almost total sharpness aginst a pleasing BG.
Interesting that this individual shows no green scales on the hindwing!

Hi Maurizio . I have made up my mind to try harder with butterfly pictures next year. But i know i will not be able to get to this standard. This is first classwork. With sharp focusing and fine detail.. We can see every marking on the wings. With such natural colours. well taken TFS.
