Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus)

Identification
This is perhaps Europe's most exquisite falcon, occuring in a variety of gorgeous plumages. The male is a dark slaty-blue all over except for the red of his feet, undertail, eyering and bill. The female is barred grey above but is rich buff, almost-orange on the head and underparts and has a dark eye-mask which gives her a rather gentle expression. The juvenile is rather browner, especially on the crown, and the streaked underparts make it confusable with a young Hobby. The Red-foot though has a more limited black mask and much more white around the face than a Hobby. Red-foots are most likely to be confused with Kestrels since they have longish tails and habitually hover. They are, however, a little smaller, more finely built and typically manage to hover with their bodies and tails held more horizontally than a Kestrel.

Habitat
Summer visitor to open steppe country with copses where they breed in rookeries. Occurs widely in Mediterranean areas as a passage visitor.

Distribution
An annual vagrant in varying numbers, usually to the south and east of England. 657 records in Britain and Ireland up until the end of 1995.
The best areas for seeing Red-footed Falcons are in Hungary, especially on the Hortobagy plains where they are locally common. They do, however, occur in many other parts of Europe, especially on passage when birds can be expected even as far west as Mallorca and the Camargue.

Population
3 000-3,600 breeding pairs found in central and eastern Europe.

Great contrast in the picture. It's hard enough to get a great shot of a falcon, but you have managed to do it with a wild one, clearly, and have great composition. What an incredible job!
