Scarce Fiery Copper.

Heodes virgaureae (Linnaeus 1758),
Scarce Fiery Copper,
Dukatenfalter,
Morgenrood,
Vitfläckig Guldvinge,
Argo verga d’oro,
Argus Satiné,
Manto de Oro.

Wing span: 30 - 35mm

Only the males of this species show such bright golden red iridescent structural colours on the upper side of their wings, obviously a strongly developed signal for intraspecies communication between the sexes.

Females of that species look quite different being much less bright in colour and showing dark spots on the upper side of their wings.

Caterpillars feed on Rumex. Butterflies can be encountered from June to August in one generation.

The species is locally distributed from Portugal and Spain, central and northern Europe, central Asia to Mongolia. Not reported from the UK, northwestern France, the Netherlands, southern Italy. In central Europe, Heodes virgaureae prefers mountain locations, going up to approximately 2000m in the Alps.

The picture was taken on a mountain meadow in the Tyrol, at an elevation of approximately 1900m above sea level.

Italy – Bolzano – Südtirol – Passeier – Timmelsjoch

Hello Peter,
wonderful colours and compo (as always), great POV and light.
TFS and best wishes,
Elena

Hi Peter!
Well, what can one do but repeat oneself is appraising your work? This is yet another masterpiece from you. I like the sparklers on its dainty wings and also how matchingly it flutters them on those equally dainty flowers.

Very beautiful photo of this Lycaenidae!
Excellent colours!
Very good details!
Great POV and DOF!
Beautiful BG!
TFS!

It's rare to capture the truly "electric" orange of this species in a photograph - but the angle of the light does it nicely here. I have only seen this species occasionally, and it never stayed around for a portrait. I don't believe I have ever seen a female, but most female lycaenids seem to be virtually invisible compared to their mates... Another nice one, Peter.

Hallo Peter,

I really like the POV and the light on this one, Peter.
Wonderful iridescent and translucent quality to the wings.
Also the position of the antennae leaning down is rather unusual.
A great portrait of this beautiful butterfly. TFS. : )

Hello Peter!
Wonderful butterflu close up.Lighting,colors,POV,details and
composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

It was the colours that caught my eye in the thumbnail, and it got better when I saw the larger version. The colours and light on the butterfly are excellent. I love the detail in the antennae and the composition is excellent.

Well caught and composed.

This is a golden beauty. I don't recall seeing it in the Carpathians Mountains.
Really strong composed, apealling colours and good sharpness.

Hello Peter, this is a lovely shot. Colours and the lighting on the b'flies wings are great. Well done on framing as well. POV doesn't seem to be perfect, but works really well to show the beauty of wings.
Well done on this one!
