Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala)

En. Sardinian Warbler, Da. Sorthoved Sanger, Du. Kleine Zwartkop, Fi. Samettipääkerttu, Fr. Fauvette mélanocéphale, Ge. Samtkopfgrasmücke, It. Occhiocotto, No. Svarthodesanger, Sp. Curruca cabecinegra, Sw. Sammetshätta

The male is basically a dark grey warbler with whiter underparts and a jet-black hood contrasting with a white throat. The female is duller and browner but still looks rather dark, especially on the head where the hood looks dark grey rather than black but still contrasts with the white throat. She is often confused with the many other female and juvenile warblers which skulk in Mediterranean scrub but she lacks the orange wings of Whitethroat and Spectacled Warbler, the dark ear coverts of Lesser Whitethroat and Orphean Warbler, the relatively pale head of both Subalpine and Menetries warblers and the well-patterned tertials of both Ruppell’s and Cyprus Warbler. Before long, the call alone becomes so familiar that it eliminates almost all other warblers.

Unmissably common in most parts of southern Europe wherever there are scattered bushes and scrub, except perhaps in parts of Greece and Turkey where Ruppell's, Cyprus or Menetries Warblers seem to take over.

Salve Angelo,
this is a neat picture, it has all the trappings needed. This warbler is notoriously difficult to approach, so "chapeau", I don't know how you did it. Lots of points for it (unfortunately only 2).
Ciao, Dietrich

bellissimo scatto.

zero punti pure a te!
