The Large Wall Brown (Lasiommata maera) - first in my collection.
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Genus: Lasiommata
Species: L. maera (Linnaeus, 1758)
This butterfly has a wingspan of 37-50 mm. They are a little larger than Lasiommata megera and their upperwings are gray-brown. On the forewings they have a larger orange-brown area separated by a dark brown area. In the orange area close to the wing tip there is a black spot with two white nuclei surrounded by a lighter area. On the hind wing, tere are 3-4 such spots but they're much smaller. The underwings have the same colors as the Lasiommata megera. On the light brown hind wings there are 1-6 spots with black centers and surrounded by black and white outlines. |
