Description:
This butterfly owes its English name to the map-like figures on the undersides of the wings. The differences between the first and the latter broods are quite remarkable (seasonal dimorphism). These differences are linked to the differences in temperature and duration of daylight to which the pupae are exposed in winter/spring and in summer. The upper sides of the wings of the first brood are brownish orange with black markings, while those of the second brood are dark brown with white discal bands. There are also intermediate forms (f.porima).

Flight period:
Generally two, sometimes three broods from April to September. The summer form from July to August.

Larval host plants:
Urtica dioica and Urtica urens.

Hi Anna,
Went through your gallery, you have some outstanding shots and it was such a pleasure to see them all.
This is a wonderful shot of this beautiful butterfly. Rich colours, sharp details, neat focus and perfect lighting. I like the way it sits among the bright yellow flowers in a classical open-wings pose. Excellent POV and a superb composition. Kudos.

I love the colours and contrasts, would have preferred a bit more focus.

On a side note, I spent the first three months of this year in Luxembourg... I'm sure you will find plenty other just as beautiful motifs :-)

Hi Anna, again.
The combination of dark colour tones of the beautiful butterfly and bright yellow-green palette of the flower are sweet. I like the precise DOF and well balanced level of sharpness and blurriness. Perfect done and TFS.
