[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
a baby long-eared owl, growing up in our wildlife care center during last springtime.
****
The Long-eared Owl(Asio otus) is a medium-sized woodland Owl. They have prominent ear tufts that appear to sit in the middle of the head and are usually held erect. Plumage is brown and buff, with heavy mottling and barring over most of the body. Male plumage tends to be lighter than females. The eyes are golden yellow, facial disk pale ochraceous-tawny (Eurasia, Africa) to rufous (North America). The bill is black. The forehead and lores are mottled grey and white and there is a white chin patch. The legs and feet are heavily feathered.
Juveniles are similar to adults but less heavily marked. The head tufts are shorter and less defined and facial disk darker. Body feathers are tipped with greyish white.

Voice: The main advertisement call of the male is a low "hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, .....", repeated 10 to 200 times, with one note every 2 to 3 seconds. The female responds with a raspy buzz call, and often duets with the male. Calling occurs almost always during nocturnal hours. When alarmed, Long-eared Owls bark "whek-WHEK-whek" or shriek like a cat. Both males and females hiss during exchange of prey or when alarmed. During courtship, the male flies around and flaps its wings below its body, producing a clapping sound. Fledged young call with high-pitched, drawn-out feeh notes.

Hi Carole.
hat a cute creature you have pictured. I like eye-impression, excellent reproduction of the bird feathers, well saturated colours and excellent exposure. It seems to me cropping is not the best (may be vertical orientation would be better) and DOF is shallow a bit. TFS and kind regards.
Alexei.

Wow, extremely detailed plumage and a marvelous eye where you can see the uneven retina! I just love the pose and the colours!

Best regards/bengt

Hi Carole.
I would love to get some photos of this type of owl at this distance.
They sure look a bit funny when babies, but real nice as adults.
Very clean focus on the eye.
