I am still waiting when the spring will come to Lodz, so today something from the "warmer times and warmer place" - a photo from my trip to Macedonia :>

This is Smolare Waterfall - the tallest waterfall in Macedonia. It is one of the best known waterfalls in this country. As a part of the Lomnica River it is located in the Belasica Mts. at the elevation of 630 metres. The waterfall is high 39.5m (129.5 feet).

As I noted above this is the tallest waterfall in Macedonia, but maybe it is a good time and place to write something more about waterfalls in general ;>
So here are some basic facts:

Waterfall - what is it?? - in general it is geological formation resulting from water, often in the form of a stream, flowing over an erosion-resistant rock formation that forms a sudden break in elevation or nickpoint.

Types of waterfalls:
- Block: Water descends from a relatively wide stream or river.
- Cascade: Water descends a series of rock steps.
- Cataract: A large waterfall.
- Fan: Water spreads horizontally as it descends while remaining in contact with bedrock.
- Horsetail: Descending water maintains some contact with bedrock.
- Plunge: Water descends vertically, losing contact with the bedrock surface.
- Punchbowl: Water descends in a constricted form, then spreads out in a wider pool.
- Segmented: Distinctly separate flows of water form as it descends.
- Tiered: Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls.
- Multi-step: A series of waterfalls one after another of roughly the same size each with its own sunken plunge pool.

The largest top 5 waterfalls of the world:
1. Inga Falls - Congo River, Congo - volume: 1,500,000 cfs,
2. Livingstone Falls - Congo River, Congo - 1,240,000 cfs, width: 4828m
3. Bayoma Falls - Lualaba River, Congo - 600,000 cfs, width: 1372m
4. Guaíra Falls (=Salto das Sete Quedas) - Rio Paran, Brazil - 470,000 cfs, width: 4828m
5. Khone Falls - Mekong River, Laos - 410,000 cfs, width: 10783m

The tallest top 5 waterfalls of the world:
1. Angel Falls (=Kerepakupai Merú) - Venezuela - height: 979m
2. Tugela Falls - South Africa - height: 948m
3. Three Sisters Falls (=Tres Hermanas, Cataras las) - Peru - height: 914m
4. Olo'upena Falls - USA - height: 900m
5. Yumbilla - Peru - height: 896m

Well, if you compare the waterfall from this picture with mentioned above as world's tallest or largest, it is rather... small one :> Anyway, I hope it is still interesting :>

And here you can see another waterfall from my Balkan trips :>

The white water looks very nice against the dark rock, Radomir.
You have done a good job of giving the fall an impressive personality from your low POV.
There is a waterfall of similar dimensions on the road to my native place in the hills. The funny part is that it falls flush in the middle of the road from a rock overhang and gives your car a nice wash while you drive through it. Many people actually stop a little longer under it to get a full car wash!! I wonder why the fall has not been diverted for years.
TFS and regards.

Hi Radomir,
Beautiful shot of the tallest waterfall in Macedonia. Interesting vertical drop. Very nice pov and composition. Very well done. Also thanks for the informative note.

Cześć Radek
Jak zwykle ciekawa prezentacja. Rzeczywiście, porównując wielkość sfotografowanego przez Ciebie "okazu" z Top 5, to wypada on słabo.

Big or small, this surely is a majestic waterfall Radomir, captured perfectly by an expert, my friend. I can almost feel the cool wind originating from it. Good job and an excellent composition indeed!

Hi Radomir

A great POV with really good exposure - showing this unusual waterfall to perfection actually this would more correctly be a watershute, much rarer, as it is touching the rock throughout the fall.

Hi Radomir.
Superb post card from you after long delay of sharing such kind of pictures. All is amazing: water fall and surroundings, shooting technique and impressive (simply blameless) result. I also like crisp sharpness and extreme details of all image, amazing clean colours and lights. Well done and TFS.

Hi Radek

A very beautiful post again from you my friend!
This looks like a great place and a beautiful waterfall!
But you should see the one in Romania, too :) It's actually quite close to where i live (perhaps a 2 hour drive plus some walking through the woods). I saw it when i was a kid and i'm strongly thinking of going again there this year. It's about 80-90m tall :)

Anyway, you managed here a splendid photo and integrated the entire height of this great one! Congratulations for that (i might have some problems with that).
The light here is very well controlled and the colors are gorgeous.
Also the shutter speed and the effect of the water are great to show us the power of the water and the speed it descends with.
A terrific note on waterfalls, too!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Radomir,

Very nice picture and very educative note. That is very amazing because it does not seem to be so high as 40 m. Very nice composition, sharpness and natural colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Randomir,
This is such an interesting and well documented post! I really enjoyed reading those notes as well as admiring this beautiful perspective. Composition works well with good exposure despite those zones of light and shadow. Thanks :)!

What a complete and interesting note to accompany this lovely picture of a fall. I wish I could shower under it in a beautiful weather! We feel the height in this picture because of the composition which is nice and detailed too. The exposure is spot on and thank you to share such a beautiful place!

Francine

Magnifique, impressionnant, grandiose, superbe composition.

Hello Radomir,
A well composed, well exposed shot of this highest Macedonian waterfall. The flatness of the rock is interesting and so is your good note.
Thanks for sharing both,
Best wishes, Ivan
