[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last week I posted a shot of one of these huge spiders, enjoying itself with a cicada it had 'invited' for dinner. This is a close up of the last thing the cicada must have seen.
These spiders cling motionless in the centre of their intricate webs, waiting for unwary flying insects to drop by. When the spider senses movement, it vibrates the web violently, probably to further entangle the victim. It then proceeds to stun or paralize its prey and spins it in a silk like cocoon, after which it finishes the act of turning it into a meal. When the whole process is done, the wrapped up victim is dropped to the ground. Again I presume this is done to keep the web clear and thus less visible.
To take this shot, I used a magnifying filter, but the fact that the spider was facing down, put me into an awkward position [lying face up in the undergrowth]. I had to use the view finder because the sunlight was very bright, and besides, I had to be very careful to avoid touching the very intricate web. The result was, I believe well worth the effort, even though I had to get my wife to remove quite a few thorns from my backside.

Hi Mark!
As they say: No pain, no gain. The thorns into the backside were well worth the effort. It is a sterling image with the spider staring down at you with its multiple eyes. Fantastic face-to-face with this creature looking menacingly grand. Some of the details stand out very sharply.

I guess lantana flowers in India are more useful to the bees than in Saudi Arabia.
