Hi Mark!
You got yourself a prize shot of this lovely swallowtail, my friend. The beautiful colourful plant on which it is stationed adds to the appeal of the entire composition.
Alas, my eyesight is getting weaker at my age. That may be the reason why you discerned lack of focus in my recent picture of a robber fly though it was sitting peacefully when I shot it.
Thanks for sharing this picture perfect in every respect.

I wouldn't call this a "half-decent" shot! It's brilliant, very sharp and the butterfly looks great against the red-orange leaves. I'm envious, I think you were lucky!

Congratulations on getting your first Swallowtail shot and I think it was well worth the wait as it is excellent, the composition is superb also a great POV that shows off the beautiful shape of the Swallowtail, the detail is lovely and sharp and the colours are perfect, great BG too.

brilliant capture of the European Swallowtail!
Flawlessly sharp, well exposed, and placed on a most magnificent background of splendidly colourful leaves. Slightly more space on top or less below would make the composition a perfect one, but even so, this is a most beautiful, very unique, eye catching, extraordinary portrait of P. machaon! My congratulations!

I love the way this swallowtail stands out against the red leaves.

I too would argue that this is much better than a "half decent" shot. Sharpness is excellent and the color of the foliage really sets off the color of the insect. I'm glad he decided to pose for you. Well done.

Please, don't "half decent" it! The only half decent thing with it might be the composition with the subject place in the upper part of the frame instead of the lower portion of it. But the background colors are splendid. When I think of taking a shot of a butterfly I always try to remember to blur the background as much as possible so that it's not a distraction. But in this picture the sharpness of the BG is a necessity. Genuinly beautiful image. My congratulations,

Much more than a half decent shot as you describe it - excellent I would call it.
