Ever wondered what makes a peacock’s tail so colourful? And, what creates the perfect eye patterns on each feather?
Now, Chinese researchers
have the answer to this colourful puzzle. They owe it to
the crystals found built into the feathers. The scientists
believe that the crystals act like a kaleidoscope,
splitting light into different
colours.
To reach this conclusion, the research team looked at a peacock’s tail feathers using a sensitive scanning electron microscope. On a ‘closer’ look, it made them realize that each feather had a central stem with barbs on each side, which were further adorned with an array of smaller, flat barbs or barbules.
The scientists found that the outside layer of each barbule consisted of a two-dimensional crystal structure composed of criss-crossing rods. Depending on the number and space of the rods, the light waves passing through them produced the distinct colours. |
