Carabus (Procrustes) coriaceus L.
Family: Carabidae - ground beetles

One of the biggest European ground-beetles (up to 4,2cm.). It lives in almost entire Europe (excluding Iberian Peninsula, Finland and Birtish Isles). Usually it occurs in light, dry forest but in the mountains it may be found on grasslands (as this one was).

The individual on the picture is a female. In carabids you may see the difference in the shape of the first feet. In males the segments are flat and broad, in females - narrow and cylindric.

A superb macro shot. I love that semi-metallic blue color on the beetle. The detail and DOF is outstanding here. As always, you have great informative notes to further my education.

A beautiful beetle with its shiny blue armor.
Yes, this is quite common in Eastern Europe, but it's quite hard to photograph them as they are very fast and agile.(Afler all it must be, it's a predator).

Hola Michal:The great metallic coloring is very attractive for the view, very well illuminated and contrasted. The color of its eyes is charming. Great shot of this beetle Michal. I love the glossy blue-black against the matt grey of the slate. Lovely detail and sharpness and composition too. Your note is very interesting, I got a shot of a ground beetle myself and now I'll be able tell which sex it is. TFS :)

Just to add some entomological details.
This species usually preys on snails and slugs and because of that, as other members of the genus Carabus, it is protected in most European coutries.
