[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Stoneflies (Order Plecoptera) are rarely photographed.
Although they are not fast and not too small, they are not easy to spot.

They are very ancient order of hemimetabolic insect with the earliest known fossils dating from the Permian. As in mayflies and dragonflies, they larvae are aquatic, most often predacious and similar to adults. The difference is that stoneflies live only in well aerated, cool, clean and fast flowing water. And there not so many waters left like that around us. That is why they most likely to be found in mountain areas.

The characteric feature of the order are two long slender cerci emerging from the tip of the abdomen. There are about 2 000 named species over the world.

Stoneflies have also very interesting mating behaviour. Males drum (beat their abdomen on the substrate i.e. whatever they are standing on) to attract females, and females drum in reply, the frequencies are species specific and are transmitted through the substrate not through the air. The normal sequence is 1) male drums, 2) female drums back, 3) male moves a little way towards female and drums again, 4) female drums back again, 5) male moves closer to female and drums some more, 6) female drums back again, eventually after an indefinate amount of comunication the pair meet and mate. Females only mate once and mated females do not reply to males.

I like this one Michal!

Sharp and well exposed. Diagonal position of the insect is good. And I love the position of the yellow flower. Well balanced composition.

Well worth the capture, Michal. The iridescence is beautiful. I have read of these insects, but don't recall seeing an image - particularly such a good one.

Really great shot of this rarely found insect! It stands out so clear and bright against the background. The greyish/silvery/transparent colours of it must be difficult to reproduce but they come out so extremely well here. And what a great note along with it! Many thanks!

Interesting insect, Michal. I think this is a first for me. It must be very hard to photograph something that is so transparent, but you did a wonderful job. The focus and exposure are excellent. The bright yellow flower provide a colorful BG. Well done and TFS. : )

A nice clear macro Michal.Good composition too.
I have seen these but never in a flower,usually by a stream in the forest,or near an outside light at night.
A very interesting note too.I've never heard them drumming,but then I doubt that I would.Probably beyond the range of human hearing.
