Having a short break at work I'm pleased to present to you:

Potamon fluviatile (Herbst, 1785)
Family: Potamonidae
Order: Decapoda
Classis: Malacostraca

As everybody knows there are plenty of crab species in the sea. However there are also some that thrive in freshwaters. Most of them are distributed in the tropical regions but there are a few species present in Europe as well. Here you can see one of them.

This species have carapace even up to 10cm wide and is distributed over the southern Europe: Apenin Peninsula and Balkans. They occur in former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece and in Turkey. Presumably it may be found also in the Dobrogea region in Romania.

Where do they occur? Mostly in lakes and rivers, including the mountain streams. As all crabs they are not specialized feeders and take everything they can - plants, invertebrates and carcasses of other animals.

In the Skadar Lake in Montenegro they are very common. You may observe them at nights and evenings, when they leave their burrows and other hidings on land to go to feed in water.

Nice and well done pictore of this specie.
We got something alike oin the small rivers close to Black Sea in Dobrogea. I don't know if is the same specie, but it could be.

Zdjecie bardzo ciekawe, bo dosc malo jest krabow na TN. Ogolnie dobra jakosc i swiatlo, niezly kadr. Mysle, ze moznaby troche "poeksperymentowac" z POV'em [nie za bardzo wiem jak to okreslic po polsku ;) ] Widzialam troche zdjec krabow i dobry POV moze pomoc uzyskac fajne efekty.

I never knew there were fresh-water crabs Michal, so this is very interesting. We only get small ones here in our local rockpools, but there are bigger ones elsewhere in NZ. I'm sure it would love living in Greg's aquarium, eating all his tiny family!

Witaj Michale,
Ten to lubi taplać sie w błotku hehe. Ładnie go skadrowałeś, po przekątnej jest mu całkiem dobrze. Biedaczek, już troszeczkę pokiereszowany, ale t w niczym nie umniejszyło walorów fotografii, a wrecz przeciwnie.
