On my quest to find different species of native orchids, I went to a new area where I knew orchids would grow. The book called "De Orchideeen van Nederland" written by C.A.J Kreutz and H. Dekker does help me to find locations and identify the plant.

On this quest, I had to do some driving, since the area was unkown to me. But eventually I found a parking space and went on a nice walk through the swamps. The weather was actually too bright, and the temperatures too high, but the area was beautiful. After about an hour of an unfruitful search I took a short rest. Not much later two elderly men walked by and asked me if I had made any good photos. I had to answer that I didn't. I mentioned that I was looking for orchids and they responded that they know where they were growing. But, both were reluctant to say where. They said too many people come to this place and dig the orchids out of the grond to take them home. When I mentioned that this is against the law and that these wonderful plants need to be procted they started to become more open. After some more explenation of what I do with my photos they gave me directions to a possible location. As you can see the location was perfect. It only took me about 10 minutes to find two flowering orchids.

The Lesser Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera bifolia) is another first for me but I hope to see more of them especially when the sun is about to set. The flowers will smell wonderful in the evening and will atract many insects.

Hi Niek,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful orchid and what a name it has - being a butterfly lover I got attracted immediately. Your quest for new species is really commendable and you show a nice variety here with immaculate sharpness and lovely colours. Really eager to see many more. Superb handling of light and exposure levels. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Splendida macro di orchidea, bellissima composizione con un "artistico" BG, ottima nitidezza, molto belli i colori. E' il momento di questi bellissimi fiori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Niek

Well done on two counts with this lovely shot of the beautiful terrestrial orchid. Firstly, the search and the endurance you showed in finding the flowers, and secondly, the excellent capture you achieved with these little white flowers.

White is really nothing (especially so on the printed medium) unless one can attain some colour cast on it such as the yellowish-green tone you got with these orchids. Without such a tonal enhancement (whether it be greyish, bluish, greenish, reddish, or whatever other colour) you are in for a hard time as the whites are bound to over expose. You did a great job here and the whites are even shown that much better with the OOF and dark BG. The colours are good, the details are sharp, and the vertical composition was well cropped thus the positioning of the flower is appealing to the eye.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Niek

It is wonderful to hear that the people living near these flowers are so protective of them. This is a real delicate beauty. You have composed this well, the DOF is spot on and the colours natural.

Hello Niek,
This is a lovely close capture of the Lesser Butterfly orchid that needs the right background to stand out and this background is superb. Very fine white/yellow colours too and sharp details. Well done!
TFS and cheers, Ulla
