[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I did it. I found my first wild orchid. It has been a quest, but once I found one, I found more than 20 of them in an area no bigger then 100 square meters.

This was the whole reason of visiting Dwingelderveld. Because I knew that they were growing there. Luckely I was in time and at the right place. But before I was able to take this photo I had to hide under my poncho for at least 10 minutes. All the time looking at the sky and this orchid. After the rain stopped, I was able to find the right position to lay down flat on my belly. Being carefull not to step on any other orchid that was growing close to it. I wasn't able to use my tripod, because it would have meant to put it legs on top of some other orchids. Luckely their was enough light to get a good aperture.

To give myself some critique; I am not that happy with the slighly disturbing BG.

I haven't been able to find information about the Moorland Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata supsp. elodes) If somebody knows a good site, or has some additional information in English, you are more than welcome to provide it to me.

Shot in RAW. Adjustment in whitebalance, converted to TIFF. Small levels adjustment, USM, frame, resize, USM, converted to 8-bit and saved for TN.

Don't worry about the BG I don't find it distrubing at all. It shows the true location the orchid grows in and you will find plenty more of this orchid in scotland very shortly. In some places it can be difficult not to camp or walk on them. I was actually just out looking at the wild orchid growing my my garden...

Great shot with excellent DOF and sharpness. A touch more DOF may be needed to hold the stem in focus, but you did a veru good job here.

Must fly - inlaws are here and husband is not!

Hello Niek,
Excellent capture of the Heath Spotted Orchid. Very sharp details of flowers and colours are natural. I don't find the background disturbing at all - it looks natural. Well done - I hope you find more orchids!

Beauty in small things Niek. You know I would most likly step over (not on) somthing like that and not take notice. The scales need to fall from my eyes of such small wonders. You captured this very well both in detail and composition. Well done.

I never had the luck to see a wild orchid in nature. This one is beautiful and I like your sharp shot. The blurred BG is very nice here.

Wow, it's so exciting to find a orchid in the wild. I know around here late May and June are the best time to find orchids. Beautifully captured as you have both open blooms and ones about to open. The pattern and colour is gorgeous on this orchid.

What a beauty! I think you did very well under the less than ideal conditions. Beautiful pastel colors. Nice sharp detail. I think the backround is sufficently OOF to not be a distraction at all. Looks good to me!

Hi Niek

A great shot with interesting note - I am still playing with macro! I think the BG works very well. I also like the way that you have handled the exposure - you have maintained the focus and not let the highlights burn out.

Beautiful wild orchid Niek, I like it.
Well composed with very good DOF, detail, soft light & colors. Well seen from the blurred BG as well. I think the BG is diffuse enough to add a certain texture or feel to the frame, without disturbing :)
