Today another Kings bolete from an different pov.
I photographed them only and don't eat them.
The King's bolet are in the Netherlands on the Red list and is there protected by federal law, so think twice when you pick them.
But here on TN we are photographers and we don't picck them? or not?


Latin name - Boletus edulis

This mushroom is known world-wide as one of the best edibles. It is called the cep in France, the Steinpilz in Germany, porcini in Italy--and the "king bolete" in English speaking countries. It has many close relatives and varieties, most of which are almost indistinguishable in their excellence (see comments below for more information). However, if you are planning on eating these mushrooms, do not rely on this page alone for your identification!

Boletus edulis is a pretty easily recognized mushroom. It has a characteristic shape (with a swollen base), reticulation on the stem, and its cap has a characteristic texture--like a very well buffed, soft, sticky leather. Its white to olive yellow pores do not bruise blue when injured.

Description:

Ecology: Mycorrhizal with conifers, especially spruce, and (in some locations) with hardwoods; growing alone, scattered, or gregariously; summer and fall; widely distributed. In North America this mushroom is more common from the Rocky Mountains westward, but is (thankfully!) occasional in the east.

Cap: 8-30 cm, convex in the button stage, becoming broadly convex to nearly flat; tacky when wet; smooth, like well buffed leather; light brown to brown to dark vinaceous brown (sometimes nearly red).

Pore Surface: Whitish at first, becoming yellow to olive; tubes same; pores tightly packed at first; not bruising or, in age, bruising olive.

Stem: 8-20 cm long; 2-10 cm thick at apex; usually club-shaped to nearly club-shaped when young (rarely equal), club-shaped to equal; finely reticulate over at least the upper half; white, or white below and brownish above.

Flesh: White, solid, unchanging; sometimes tinged with rose shades near the cap surface and around worm holes; rarely discoloring slightly blue near the tubes.

Odor and Taste: Nutty; not distinctive.

Chemical Reactions: KOH on cap orange or red; on flesh negative. Ammonia black to orange on cap; negative on flesh. Iron salts pale greenish on cap; pale greenish on flesh.

Spore Print: Olive brown to brownish.

Microscopic Features: Spores 13-19 x 4-7 µ; smooth; spindle shaped to nearly elliptical.

Hello Gert,
You are my neighbour today and show a very fine view of a Boletus. Great details and fine natural colours that stand out against the natural background. Well, we certainly pick them and eat them as in Sweden they're so plentiful as many other species of edible fungi. But they're certainly beautiful where they stand until the slugs get them!

Ha die Gert,

Wat een haarscherp plaatje van het Eekhoorntjesbrood. De structuur op de stam is magnifiek te zien. Ik denk dat je het netwerk onder de grond zo ook ongeveer moet zien. Is mooi die diagonale positie van de paddestoel. Vooral omdat het zo natuurlijk overkomt. Kleuren zijn mooi en natuurgetrouw. Leuk detail zijn de insecten onder de kap.

Een fijne opname en leuk te lezen dat je ze laat staan, ondanks dat het heel lekker eten is.(zelf nog nooit geproefd hoor)

Prettig weekend en tot TFS BOB

You must spend a lot of time on the ground Gert:-) A fine angle for this one..I think perhaps I am coming to like the almost 90 degree angle...as opposed a 45 say...this way it gives the focal, which is already low on the ground, a good full frame and you are able to capture much of the fungi..

Dy you know what taste it? In my country edible mushrooms aren't protected. I hope that here long time won't jet. This year King bolete we have from 25 October to November in abundance. I myself gathered over 100. I perceive by this large on right very small mushroom.

Hello Gert,

Your big mushromm looks very well as image is so sharp that even fine surface under its hat can be observed. I like how you have rendered the surface of mushroom's leg. Fine pattern can be observed due to the reachjness of color tones that can be seen. Light was used in an excelent manner so that colors are looking absolutly natural.
