In the Netherlands we call 'Dragonfly' and 'Damsel' both 'Libellen'.
A "Dragonfly' (Anisoptera) is called a 'Een Echte Libelle' (Echte = Real) or a "Glazen Maker'.
'Glazen Maker' is dutch for 'window maker'. It was called this way because in the early days the window of a house was made out of small bits of glass, looking like the wings of this insect. The name 'Dragonfly' comes from their fierce jaws, which they use to catch flies
What we call 'Waterjuffer' is called 'Damselflies' in English. They are smaller
Oh yes, dragonflies are ancient insects. They were around before the dinosaurs! The lived 300 years ago and had a wing span of 20cm!!
The largest dragonfly lives in Australia, the Petalura gigantea, wich can be 10cm long |
