Plants of Nth. Ireland

Species Description:
A beautiful perennial plant of wet and very acidic situations on bogs or moorland, with deep yellow, star-like flowers and iris-like leaves, normally growing up to about eight inches or so in height. Attractive reddish-brown fruits succeed the flowers.
‘Ossifragum’ means ‘bone-breaker’ and refers to the brittle bones of animals reared only on the calcium-deficient vegetation of places where this plant grows.

Nephrotoxicity of Narthecium ossifragum in cattle in Norway

Norwegian College of Veterinary Medicine, Oslo, Norway.

During the summer of 1992 renal failure was diagnosed in 232 grazing cattle in 85 herds on the west coast of Norway. The salient clinical signs were depression, anorexia and melaena or fresh blood in the faeces; diarrhoea was also commonly observed. The serum concentrations of creatinine, urea, magnesium and phosphorus, and the activities of glutamate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase were above normal and the serum calcium concentration was below normal. Post mortem examinations consistently revealed renal tubular necrosis. In some cases there was liver necrosis and also erosions at the base of the tongue, in the oesophagus and in the jejunum and colon. The toxicity was probably caused by the plant Narthecium ossifragum (bog asphodel).

Abstract:
Narthecium ossifragum, a member of the Liliaceae family, contains phytochemicals that have hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic activity in several ruminant species. 3-Methoxyfuran-2(5H)-one has previously been isolated as the principal nephrotoxin, and its toxicity has been confirmed in vivo. However, previous investigations into the nephrotoxicity of N. ossifragum both in vivo and in vitro indicate that other phytochemical factors might contribute to the nephrotoxicity of the plant. In this study, the cytotoxicity in renal tubular cells (LLC-PK1) was measured using an aqueous extract from the plant and fractions from chromatographic separation to identify the cytotoxic constituents of the extract. In an iterative process two different groups of compounds were identified as the major cytotoxic principles in LLC-PK1 cells: steroidal saponins (primarily di- and trisaccharides of sarsasapogenin) and 5-hydroxy-4-methoxyfuran-2(5H)-one. Up to a concentration of 880 g/mL (7.7 M) 3-methoxyfuran-2(5H)-one was not cytotoxic. The cytotoxicity of the saponins was abolished upon hydrolysis, indicating that the carbohydrate moiety of the molecule is a prerequisite for toxicity on the cellular level. The results of the present study have two important implications: first, the results question the direct involvement of 3-methoxyfuran-2(5H)-one in the nephrotoxicity of N. ossifragum; second, the findings should induce future investigations into the possible role of saponins in N. ossifragum-related nephrotoxicosis observed in ruminants that graze on this plant.

Hello Gert,
An excellent portrait of the Bog Asphodel, a flower that is very rare in Sweden too. Supern sharpness and composition against an OOF natural BG.
TFS this beauty,
Regards,
Ivan

Hi Gert,

Very good capture of this rare flower, that I had not known.

It is always difficult to record light flowers of little contrast.

TFS,

Ishi

Hello Gert! great shot of this beautiful flower. TFS. Regards,

Hi Gert, wonderful image of this rare plant, a very worthy upload, the colours are good and the details are excellent. very good information as well.

Hoi Gert,

Groeten,
Niek
