[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A while ago I tried to shoot some nice pictures of the Whooper Swans who are present in the Lelystad Naturepark. Because it was so sunny that day I could not get the right exposure and burnt all the details. Last Friday my girlfriend and I went to the Park again and the weather was slightly overcast. It was the perfect weather for shooting some Swans! I think I succeeded. What a beautiful Swan, eh? Don't you think she really has the right curves?? :)

This is a Whooper Swan (Cygnus Cygnus). It's common name refers to the loud ‘whooping’ calls that it produces. This large white Swan tends to hold its neck erect whilst swimming and that's a very funny sight, particularly if you are used to seeing mute Swans swim. In spring and summer, some adults may develop rusty ‘stained’ plumage on the neck and head caused by the iron-rich water on which they live. It can be distinguished from the smaller Bewick’s Swan in that the wedge-shaped yellow colouration of the bill extends beyond the nostrils, with the rest of the bill being black; in Bewick’s Swans the yellow patch is small and rounded. Juveniles have greyish brown plumage and a pink and black bill.

Whooper Swans breed across northern Eurasia. Most of the Whooper Swans that spend the winter in Britain and Ireland originate from the population that breeds in Iceland. The population breeding in north-western Europe winters in Denmark and parts of Germany, and there are two western Siberian breeding populations; one winters in the eastern Mediterranean while the other migrates to the area around the Caspian Sea. In Britain a few pairs occasionally try to breed in Scotland, but with varying success.

Whooper Swans make use of a wider range of habitats than Bewick’s Swans. They are found on lowland farmland close to the coast, on flooded fields, mudflats, lakes and small ponds and lochs and will graze on farmland in winter. They breed in boggy habitats with pools and small lakes where there are plenty of reeds and other sheltering vegetation.

Great picture, great quality and very good composition, I like the contrast between the white long neck of this swan to the green background.

Just perfect composition Pieter! Details, sharpness, colours - all great but of course shape of bird's neck makes this picture. Perfectly spotted and captured in right way!

She has all the right curves in the right place Pieter!!
Nicely composed, good sharp detail and good DOF.
The exposure is perfect, like you say, swans on a sunny day are very tricky to photograph. Well captured.
Thanks for posting.

She has great curves :)

The composition is particularly good because the curve of the neck leads you to the head, which is exactly the effect you were trying to achieve.

I think the exposure is quite good, so hard to get good whites. Good note too.

This is an excellent portrait Pieter. The composition and framing are superb. The overcast light allowed for great detail and color. GREAT JOB!

A great picture, Pieter. Perfect composition and the exposure is just right. We all think swans are white but they are not really, more of a dirty light-brown!

Brilliant title, interesting composition and pose Pieter. Exposure is nicely handled revealing good plumage details. Very good shot.

Regards Steve.
