Latin name- Calospilos sylvata

The Clouded Magpie is a moth of the family Geometridae. The wingspan ranges from 35-44 mm.

The adults fly between May and July. They are attracted to light.

The flight season refers to the British Isles. This may vary in other parts of the range.

Wingspan 35-44 mm.

Local, but widely distributed throughout much of England, Wales, southern Scotland, it also occurs in Ireland.

The adults fly between May and July, when they can be attracted to light, and inhabit woodland, parks and similar habitats.

The foodplants are wych elm (Ulmus glabra) and English elm (U. procera), and the caterpillars are rather distinctive, being marked with longitudinal black and yellow stripes.

Hallo Gert,

Groeten Bob

Hi Gert,
Excellent capture of Cloded Magpie with nice POV and composition, sharp details and beautiful colours.

There is almost a spring-like quality. I think this comes from the use of the delicate pastel colours which are very much such as colours used in early spring...This was taken 10 days after my B'Day...hmmm...A nice image which I shall call now a belated B'Day card. It does have that card print quality as well.

Hi Gert,

I've been looking forward to seeing your pictures again! A beautiful moth on lovely flowers. Wonderful colors and markings that remind me of a pretty fabric. Maybe some day I will learn the differences between moths and butterflies.

Hello Gert,
A fine capture of a Clouded Magpie moth, nicely shown on the Hemp agrimony flowers from a fine POV with good sharpness.
TFS this species that I haven't seen for a long time. I wonder if it is shown for the first time on TN?
Regards,
Ivan

Hello Gert,

Nice to see you back! You have made a nice photo of the moth. I never saw this insect in my region. I will look for.

Image quality is very nice having nice sharp details on insect's body as well as on part of the flowers. Very good color rendering as there can be seen many delicate color tones.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
