After I took a few photos of the shifting sands, I decided to walk to a lake to find a good spot for the sunset. I only had about an hour left before the sun would set. (I just noticed that the time on my camera is still the summer time)

Getting close to the lake, I noticed these small pools of water flowing away from the lake. Both were totally frozen. Although water was still flowing from one pool to the other. The larger one was already abused by the kids but luckely this one was still untouched.

Exposing this view was difficult. Having such a bright rim of light along the horizon makes the use of a grad ND almost impossible. I think I need to order a reverse grad ND to overcome these type of situations. Anyway, I pretty much managed the exposure using a 0.9 ND hard grad without making the sky look to dark in the top region of the composition.

Hi Niek!

Anyhow hard it was you did manage the situation well. The view is wonderful with the detailed sky and ice, framed by also well exposed grass. Horizon looks fine for me too. Useful notes for managing situations like this, all I'd need to do is to buy some filters I guess :)
TFS!

Best regards,
Andor

Hallo Niek
As the image opened slowly from the thumbnail, the most striking clouds greeted me. I could see it from here in front of me, till right back in the distance. It is indeed a stunning sight. Looking further to the horizon the most beautiful stripes of colour of the setting sun unfold in front of my eyes. Then my eyes feast on the relaxing water stream right in front of me, and to round this spectacular sight in full, I see the one lonesome tree’s silhouette in the water. Great work displayed.
Best regards.
Anna

Hello Niek !
What a wonderful picture, once again ! I love the composition and the low POV, but I love the beautiful sky even more, with the soft colors and the nice clouds. You managed exposure very brilliantly, the result is pretty awesome. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hello Niek,
I admire your perseverance in the cold wind! A beautiful view across the water to the sunset beyond and I love the cloud formations. The exposure couldn't be better. Very well composed too.

Hello Niek,
A fine landscape that makes good use of the low light of winter. The wide-angle lens stretches the perspective to give pleasing composition and the mottled effect of the clouds gives a fine effect of a pre-impressionist painting with the half frozen water in the Fg providing a fine reflection of the low sun and its light.
A nice one to view and thanks for sharing it!
Kind regards,
Ivan

Hi Niek!

It's the perfect exemple of a good composition. The interesting and detailed foreground leads us into the picture, the horizontal line at one third of the picture attracts our attention, the perspective of the delightful sky accentuates the depth of view.

Moreover, the picture reflects perfectly well the winter ambience and atmosphere and the title suits the content at best.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Niek

Another very nice shot from you, my friend!
The sky and clouds here are absolutely fantastic and that brighter patch in the middle looks like a portal opening up there...i'm trying not to get too religious here :)
But yeah, anyway, that pattern made my the clouds with the light reflected from each of them in individual ways is really beautiful. And it's nice that you also managed to get a reflection in the pool below.
The details from the FG are well retained and complement the mosaic of the clouds well, too.
You are right about the reversed grad filter though...in such cases it's use is perfect and otherwise it's really difficult to compensate the obvious difference in light.
Even so, very well done here!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

I think you handled the exposure brilliantly on this shot, Niek. You nailed that deep Dutch vista. I know you are attracted to this type of subject and that wide angled lens works to your advantage. Love the foreground frozen pond.

Evelynn : )

Hallo Niek,

Hi Niek

I think you managed the exposure beautifully. I love the details caught both in the clouds and the frozen water. The warm light on the horizon lifts the shot and it is beautifully composed

TFS

Splendid, Niek! I haven't made the time to log onto this site in a few months, and this image makes me really regret not doing so... the reflection of the cloud formations on the ice along with the stark colors and lighting - WOW! Way to go, Sir. - Kelly
