In a pool full of frog-spawn we saw a lot of these frogs. The pool was a little part of the Drents-Friese Wold. A wonderful nature area with woods, swamps, dunes and sand-drifts.

The Edible Frog (Pelophylax kl. esculentus is a name for a common European frog, also known as the common water frog or green frog (however, this latter term is also used for the North American species Lithobates clamitans). It is used for food, particularly in France for the delicacy frogs' legs. Females are between 5 to 9 cm long, males between 6 to 11 cm.

Pelophylax esculentus is the fertile hybrid of the Pool Frog (Pelophylax lessonae) and the Marsh Frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), hence the addition of the "kl." (for klepton or synklepton) in the species name. During the ice ages the population of the common ancestor of both species was split into two. These populations diverged, but remained genetically close enough to be able to create fertile hybrids. However, when edible frogs mate with each other, their offspring are often misformed, so there are no pure populations of edible frogs. The hybrid populations are propagated by female edible frogs mating with males of one of the parental species.

Hi Peter.
Very cute frog. Unfortunately, I meet them very seldom. I like wonderful natural surrounding of the animal and precise DOF. All image of the frog is in focus and sharp and difficult BG is nicely smoothed. Sunlight and specks on the frog and water plants are very cute, look like small brilliances. TFS and all the best for weekend.
Alexei.

Hello Peter, my neighbour!
A fine capture of the Edible Frog taken from a great POV with excellent sharpness, colours and lighting to show the features with nice clarity that makes it stand ou from its natural pool environment.
We don't have this hybrid species in Sweden but the Pool frog occurs in a small area in central Sweden.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Peter;
Look at the D700 of Alexei..I am amazed at the difference in the cameras..I am researching now as teh D300 was one I was thinking about say in 2015 when my ship may or may not return.

The green is hard to work with but your glass handeled it well..frogs are as cute an amphibian as there are!
Bob

Hi Peter!

Hello again Peter!
A frog is rather rare object in your gallery so I decided to comment also this picture :) I like low POV and eye-contact. Nice capture in natural habitat and very useful and informative note, especially its part about taxonomy of this "species" :)
Greetings and all the best!
