Pyrrhosoma nymphula male / Large Red Damselfly male / Frühe Adonisjungfer / Petite nymphe au corps de feu / Vuurjuffer.
Widespread and common.Pyrrhosoma nymphula is one of the earliest Odonata species on the wing.
Adult flight period extends from 16 march to 14 september.

It has a preference for small acidic pools and is able to persist on many very dry sites that have become unsuitable for other Odonata. It is also quick to colonise newly created ponds.

The only other red damselfly in europe is the Small Red Damselfly Ceriagrion tenellum only this species has red legs and Pyrrhosoma nymphula has black legs!!


KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES:

-A large and robust red damselfly with extensive dark markings
-Black markings on upper surface of abdomen towards the apex
-Some females are almost entirely black on the upper surface of the abdomen (form melanotum)

A bit soft on focus.

Harm:
A very nice portrait of this abundant little damselfly. I think a little "tweaking" PP would "lift" the image further. I've done a one-minute workshop on it - hope you like it.
