Polyommatus icarus male/ Common Blue male / Gemeiner Bläuling oder Hauheckel-Bläuling / L'Argus Bleu ou L'Azuré de la bugrane / Icarus blauwtje.

Wing length 14-18 mm. The upper side of the male is blue, the female is brown, but can vary a lot in the amount of aditional blue. On the under side of the upper wings there are two, sometimes very small, spots near the base of the wings.
Flying time:
From the end of May untill early July and from medio July untill early September.

Appearance:
Common on practically all kinds of grasslands.

Foodplant caterpillar:
The main foodplant is Common Bird's-foot-trefoil (Lotus corniculatus). Black Medick (Medicago lupulina), Common Restharrow (Ononis repens), Greater Bird's-foot-trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus), Lesser Trefoil (Trifolium dubium) and White Clover (Trifolium repens) are also used.

Eggs are laid singly on the upper surface of the young leaves of the foodplant, isolated plants being preferred.

On emerging from the egg the larva moves to the underside of the leaf, where it feeds on the lower surface without breaking through the upper leaf surface. As it grows, it feeds more-fully on the leaves, from all over the foodplant. Those larvae that overwinter do so in leaf litter at the base of the foodplant. Like many other species of blue, the larva is attractive to ants, although only in its last instar. The fully-grown larva is approximately 13mm in length.

The pupa is formed on the ground or, occasionally, at the base of the fooplant, under a few silk strands. The pupa is attractive to ants which subsequently bury it. The pupa is approximately 9mm in length.

As can be read from its name, the Common Blue is one of the most common Blues in Europe. It can be found anywhere from the Canary Islands up to the Arctic areas of Scandinavia and Finland.
