The Green-veined White butterfly (Pieris napi) is a well-known European butterfly, found in open country and woodland.

Like other "white" butterflies, the sexes differ. The female has two spots on each forewing, the male only one.

Although its caterpillars feeds on crucifers, it normally selects wild species, and is therefore not the pest that some other white butterflies have become.

It can produce up to three broods in a year. Recent research has shown that when males mate with a female, they inject methyl salicylate along with their sperm. The smell of this compound repels other males, thus ensuring the first male's paternity of the eggs - a form of chemical mate guarding.

The adult male of this species has a distinctive lemon smell.

Distinguishing marks
The veins at the under side of the lower wings are clearly coloured grey-green. The female has two darkgray or black spots on the upper side of the upper wings, the male has one.

Flying time:
Early may till june and early july till september.
There are 2 or 3 generations in one season.

Appearance:
Common. This butterfly can be found in all types of biotopes.

Foodplant caterpillar: Various Cruciferae

Like all Pieris, this is a common butterfly in the Netherlands. It is resident throughout entire Europe.

Interesting photo with outstanding technical qualities. I have never seen a butterfly land on dandelion seed puff. Excellent details, outstanding exposure. Nice DOF and green background.
