KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES:
-Broad, flattened abdomen which is pale blue in males and yellowish-brown in females and immature males.
-Yellow spots along sides of abdomen.
-Broad antehumeral stripes.
-Brown patch at base of wings.
-No brown spot on the middle of the leading edge of the wings.

De platbuik (Libellula depressa) is een algemeen voorkomende Echte libel uit de familie van de Korenbouten (Libellulidae). De platbuik is meestal te vinden bij kleine wateren met weinig vegetatie.
Uiterlijk:
De platbuik is 39 - 48 mm lang en heeft een spanwijdte van 7 à 8 cm. De platbuik is een gedrongen libel die door zijn brede en afgeplatte achterlijf en de opvallende basisvlekken op de vleugels goed van andere soorten, zoals de bruine korenbout te onderscheiden is. Mannetjes zijn vaak blauw berijpt op het achterlijf; dit kan ook voorkomen bij vrouwtjes, maar wel in mindere mate.
Gedrag en voortplanting:
De platbuik is een pionier en is vaak een van de eerste soorten bij nieuw aangelegde poelen en plasjes. Hij vliegt van eind april tot september met de piek in juni.
Het mannetje verdedigt een territorium; om dat te kunnen overzien gaat hij vaak zitten op uitkijkposten, zoals takjes of riet. Hij verjaagt platbuik-mannetjes maar ook andere libellensoorten.
De paring duurt maar enkele seconden en vindt plaats in de lucht. Het vrouwtje zet de eitjes af op de waterspiegel onder begeleiding van het mannetje.
De eitjes komen na twee tot vijf weken uit. De larve kan tot één dag rondlopen om een goede plek te vinden om zich in te graven in de bodem. Afhankelijk van de watertemperatuur kan de ontwikkeling tot imago zo'n twee jaar duren.
