| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [Dutch] |
Urapteryx sambucaria(Linnaeus, 1758) / Swallow-tailed Moth / Vliervlinder / Nachtschwalbenschwanz / la Phalène du sureau ou la Phalène soufrée.
Swallow-tailed Moth Ourapteryx sambucaria
(Linnaeus, 1758)
Wingspan 40-50 mm.
A spectacular species and one of our largest Geometrids, this is however reasonably common in Britain, except for northern Scotland where it is local or absent.
Being strictly nocturnal and having quite a short emergence period in July, it is not often encountered by the non-enthusiast.
The larvae feed on a number of trees and shrubs, but prefer ivy (Hedera helix).

Hello Harm,
Very interesting species, have splendid shape and pattern. This one I've never seen yet.
Best regards, Pawel
Hello Harm,
This is an unusual moth, to me.
The sharp focus reveals the wings to resemble fine silk! Lovely texture and colour tones.
It outstretched wings give it a somewhat ghostly appearance.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)
