Another picture from my first visit to yhe Veluwe this year.
It's a simple stillife with an fungia and an fermn on an very old trunk.
I hope you like it.

Latin name - Fomes fomentarius

Fomes fomentarius (formerly Ungulina fomentaria or Polyporus fomentarius) is a bracket fungus often named horse's hoof fungus or tinder fungus. It can be found in North America and Europe, typically on birch, but also on beech. A single tree may bear many fruiting bodies.

Whilst inedible, it has particular use in fire lighting, since the tissue of the basidiocarp can smoulder for several hours. This ability was exploited by ancient nomadic peoples to transport fire. Amadou can also be prepared from a velvet-like trama layer. The thickness of this layer varies greatly from fungus to fungus.

Fern
Latin name - Athyrium filix-femina

Lady Fern is one of Northern Ireland's commonest fern species. It occurs in most woodland areas or in hedge banks and many other situations. It is about the same size as many other common fern species growing in the same sorts of places, such as Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) or Broad Buckler-Fern (Dryopteris dilatatai), but has a more delicate appearance. The undersides of the leaf segments carry pale J-shaped sori (these are where the spores are produced) which are quite unlike those of any other Irish Fern.

It is a very variable species and numerous varieties have been taken into cultivation, some of which are extremely odd in appearance.

Hallo Gert,

A lovely composition and very beautiful plant.
In Turkish 'Akşam sefası' I think is called.
Sharing and a very nice presentation.
Congratulations.
Sincerely ...

Hi Gert,

Very simple and very beautiful. The color of the fern is stunning against the tree and the background. The fungus certainly does look like a horse's hoof and adds interest and detail to the picture. I just love the composition.
