Golden-rod Brindle-Lithomoia solidaginis
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [Dutch] |
I was so very much surprised by meeting this very rare moth(in the Netherlands) that I woold like to share it with you, although the quality of this picture is not very high.
Lithomoia solidaginis(Hübner, 1803) / Golden-rod Brindle / Bruine bosbesuil / Rollflügel-Holzeule / la Noctuelle de la verge-d'or.
Wingspan 45-51 mm.
Predominantly a moorland species, though also occurring in open woodland in places, the distribution of this moth is mainly in northern England and Wales, and central Scotland. A few southern records are attributed to migrants.
It is on the wing during August and September, and visits sugar and occasionally light.
Despite both the English and scientific names, the normal foodplants of the caterpillars are moorland species such as heather (Calluna) and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

A very rare and local species in Belgium, hitherto only known from 2 souther provinces.
The larva lives mainly on Calluna vulgaris, Vaccinium, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Myryca gale, Salix, Betula and other moorland plants. Hibernates as an egg and pupates in a cocoon under moss or soil.
The adults fly in one generation a year; from early August till early October. They come to light and to sugar and flowers, especially on Calluna and Senecio.
