Libellula quadrimaculata male / Viervlek mannetje / Vierfleck männchen / Four-spotted Chaser / La Libellule ā quatre taches femelle.

KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES:
-Small brown patch on the middle of the leading edge of each wing, this combined with the dark pterostigma is the origin of the name "Four-spotted Chaser".
-Brown tapering abdomen, becoming black towards the posterior end.
-Yellow markings on sides of abdomen.
-Dark brown patch at the base of the wings.

Common and widespread.The flight period extends from May to the end of September( Seen from 21 april til 13 of oktober). Adults are aggressive and very territorial.Males defend the airspace around waterside perch from which they feed, chase rival males or attempt to mate with passing females. Mating is brief in mid-air.
-females oviposit alone with male in attendance, releasing eggs by dipping abdomen on water surface over patches of aquatic plants.
-Prefers small oligotrophic and mesotrophic pools and lakes, often with little open water, but also large lakes and brackish sites.
-Larval habitat and habits: eggs hatch after c1 month. Larvae live amongst plant debris and take 2 years to develop
-Range: a Holarctic species. Throughout Europe except Mediterranean fringe and islands and mountainous areas of Scandinavia, Asia to Japan and N. America

Kenmerken
Beide seksen bruin (056 4a g).Vrouwtje heeft een iets breder achterlijf en de achterlijfaanhangsels hebben een spitse punt en wijken niet uiteen zoals bij de mannetjes. Enige libel met een duidelijke zwarte vlek bij de knoop van de vleugels, achtervleugels hebben een donkere basis.
Voorkomen
Algemeen. Nimfen in plantenrijke, stilstaande wateren (056 4b g).
Levenswijze
De viervlek heeft een voor libellen zeer korte paringsduur, die slechts enige seconden duurt en die uitsluitend in de lucht plaatsvindt. Direct na de scheiding begint het vrouwtje eieren af te zetten ze doet dit in de vlucht, net als bij de rombouten.
