In this photo you can see the relatively huge compound eyes of the bee. They consist of thousands of individual optic units, each complete with lens and photoreceptors. The eye may have a low resolution because of this, but is unmatched in recognizing relative movement, which is needed to avoid obstacles during flight.
Bees are also believed to see light polarization, helping them to navigate to food sources and back.
The camera I had wasn't particularly good at macro photography, which is why smaller details are a bit fuzzy. That bees refuse to sit still for a second also didn't help. |
